I stumbled upon a manga called “She, The Ultimate Weapon,” where a young school girl is implanted with a massive gun and rifle wings and forced to defend her country as a child soldier— the manga ended up being more love story of the uninteresting boy who she loved than an deep exploration of her power or her being, nor the abuse she endured to have that kind of strength; it was disappointing but par for the course for a male author penning this in the early 00s. I wanted to nevertheless borrow her design and the ethos I saw in the design of “She, The Ultimate Weapon”: a woman whose power is recognized only when she is painfully augmented, and recognizably non-human. I’ve been interested in the “divine” as well as the archetypes of feminity: monster/witch, mother, wife, goddess.
